Overview

This safari explores the rugged and remote landscapes of northern Kenya in the beautiful Samburu National Reserve. The reserve lies along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River and is home to unique wildlife species rarely seen in other parts of Kenya, including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, and the long-necked gerenuk. The safari also includes a visit to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of Kenya’s leading wildlife conservation areas and home to the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi – Samburu National Reserve

Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive north through the scenic central highlands, passing coffee and tea plantations. Continue through the town of Isiolo before arriving in Samburu National Reserve in time for lunch at your lodge or camp. In the afternoon, enjoy your first game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River where elephants, crocodiles, and many other animals gather to drink.

Day 2

Game Drives in Samburu

Spend the day exploring Samburu with morning and afternoon game drives. The reserve is known for its unique “Samburu Special Five” including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk. Lions, leopards, elephants, and cheetahs are also commonly seen.

Day 3

Full-Day Exploration of Samburu

Another exciting day discovering the reserve’s dramatic landscapes and diverse wildlife. Visit different areas of the park along the riverbanks and open plains while observing the rich birdlife and wildlife that thrive in this semi-arid environment.

Day 4

Samburu – Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After breakfast, depart Samburu and drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy located in the Laikipia region. Arrive for lunch before enjoying an afternoon game drive. The conservancy is home to a large population of rhinos and also hosts a chimpanzee sanctuary.
